This summer, our design intern, Kiera, got a firsthand look at what goes into creating a successful remodeling project at Quality Design & Remodel.
During her internship, Kiera jumped right into life at our Clifton Park Design Center. She assisted our designers with sourcing materials, helped update and maintain our Design Center samples, and organized and labeled our flooring sample collection.
She also had the opportunity to put her own design skills to work. Kiera helped design our new conference room by drawing the layout, creating renderings, and sourcing materials for the space. Along the way, she sat in on client meetings and visited active job sites, giving her the chance to experience different stages of QDR’s design-build process.
As Kiera prepared to head off to college for her Sophomore year, we asked her to share five of the biggest things she learned during her summer with QDR.
1. Every Team Member Plays a Role
One of Kiera’s biggest takeaways was just how collaborative remodeling really is. From the first time a client walks into the Design Center through design, construction, and completion, many different members of the Quality Team contribute to bringing a project to life.
2. Communication Is Key
Kiera also saw how important communication is to keeping a remodeling project on track. Whether it’s communication among our internal team, with clients, or with the trade partners involved in a project, keeping everyone informed and aligned is an essential part of the process.
3. Remodeling Is About More Than Making a Space Look Good
Great design isn’t just about selecting beautiful materials. Kiera learned that understanding how clients want to use their space is just as important. The goal is to create something that looks great while making the home function better for the people who live there.
4. Good Design Balances Trendy and Timeless
There’s a balance between creating a space that feels fresh today and one that homeowners will continue to love years from now. Kiera learned how our designers consider current styles while making selections that can stand the test of time.
5. Details Drive Quality
From making sure Design Center samples are organized and in place to getting measurements exactly right on a project, Kiera saw how seemingly small details can have a major impact on the finished result. Attention to those details is a big part of delivering the level of quality our clients expect.
