Since I started in design, technology has advanced at a remarkable pace. More and more clients are requesting that their remodels include features of a smart home. And I agree—they should. If you’re considering a remodel, there’s never been a better time to integrate smart home upgrades that not only enhance your lifestyle but also add value. So, let’s go over some of the top smart home technologies I think you should consider incorporating into your next remodel.

Smart Kitchen Appliances

Kitchen appliances are probably the favorite things for clients to pick out during their remodel. They are relatively easy to pick out, there are many aesthetically pleasing options to choose from, and there are plenty of reviews to look at for each appliance. I love suggesting smart kitchen appliances during this decision. When they see how they make mundane tasks effortless, they become no-brainers (if they fit within the investment range). Here are some of my favorite smart kitchen appliance suggestions:

  • Smart Refrigerators
Equipped with features such as built-in cameras that allow you to see the contents of your fridge remotely via a smartphone app. Some models even come with touchscreen displays where you can leave notes, manage grocery lists, or stream music and videos. Additionally, they often include features like automatic temperature adjustment, energy usage tracking, and alerts for maintenance or when the door is left open.
  • Smart Ovens and Ranges
Offer advanced features such as remote temperature monitoring and control, recipe suggestions based on available ingredients, and even voice control through virtual assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Some models also feature built-in cameras that allow you to monitor the cooking process from your smartphone.
  • Smart Dishwashers
Offer remote start and monitoring features, customizable wash cycles, and even detergent replenishment alerts. Some models can also adjust water usage and cycle duration based on load size and soil level, helping to conserve water.

Smart Bathroom Features

Even though there’s much less space to integrate smart features in a bathroom, it arguably still has as many benefits as its kitchen counterpart but in a way more focused on comfort. The bathroom is a very intimate place, and the technology we’ve implemented reflects that. Here are some of my favorite smart bathroom technologies:

  • Smart Shower Systems
Upgrade your shower experience and customize water temperature, flow rate, and spray patterns to your preferences. Some smart showers offer features like voice control, touchscreen interfaces, and presets for multiple users. Imagine stepping into a preheated bathroom in the morning or adjusting your shower settings with a voice command! Additionally, they have features like temperature sensors to prevent scalding and water-saving settings to conserve resources.
  • Smart Toilets
Once you try them, you’ll never go back. Their features, like bidets, heated seats, and automatic flushing, will change your life. Some smart toilets also include sensors that detect motion or approach, automatically opening and closing the lid for a hands-free experience. And, of course, they have integration with voice assistants, allowing for hands-free operation via voice commands.
  • Smart Mirrors
If you spend a lot of time getting ready in your bathroom, I suggest using a smart mirror that doubles as a touchscreen display. Smart mirrors can provide information such as weather forecasts, news headlines, and calendar reminders while you get ready in the morning. They can also be integrated with lighting controls, allowing you to adjust brightness and color temperature for optimal visibility.

General Smart Home Upgrades

I always suggest implementing some general smart home upgrades in any room that’s being remodeled. These are options that aren’t super technologically advanced but are very useful and help homeowners experience what it’s like to live in a smart home. Consider these as the first small step your home will take into the 21st century.

  • Smart Lighting Systems
Lighting sets the mood and ambiance of your home, and with smart lighting solutions, you can take control to a whole new level. Whether it’s adjusting the brightness to match your activities or scheduling lights to turn on and off automatically, smart lighting systems offer convenience and energy efficiency. Additionally, integrating smart blinds or shades allows you to regulate natural light effortlessly, enhancing comfort and reducing energy consumption.
  • Smart Plugs
Simple yet effective, smart plugs are an excellent addition to any home remodel project. These nifty devices enable you to remotely control traditional appliances and electronics via your smartphone or voice commands. Whether it’s turning off forgotten devices, setting schedules to conserve energy, or monitoring power usage, smart plugs offer versatility and convenience while helping you manage your energy consumption more efficiently.

Time to Think Smart

I promise that incorporating these smart home upgrades into your remodel will enhance your living experience. So, when it’s time for your next home remodeling project I recommend you keep these smart home options in mind. You won’t regret it!
